Projects - School Sports Partnership

What is the School Sports Partnership?

South East Somerset Partnership Logo In September 2006 Frome Community Learning
Partnership joined the South East Somerset School
Sports Partnership. School Sports Partnerships (SSPs) are
a key part of the Government’s National School Sport Strategy to provide more and better physical education (PE) and sporting opportunities for young people.

There are now over 400 SSPs across the country, giving 2.5 million young people the opportunity to have a better sporting future. 3200 School Sport Co-ordinators and 18000 Primary Link Teachers are in place across the country each working with a family of primary, special or secondary schools to improve sports provision in their own community.

By working with other local partners, they will be able to support PE teachers and bring qualified coaches into schools. Through this work they will be able to improve extra-curricular provision, provide links to specialist Sports Colleges, sports clubs and national governing bodies, and put in place competitive sports programmes within and between schools. All of this will make a huge difference to the lives of young people.

South East Somerset SSP comprises 115 schools in total with 15 School Sports Coordinators based at Middle and Secondary Schools. The Partnership is one of the largest in the country and extends from Chard to Frome and now has over 85% of its pupils accessing 2 hours or more PE and Sport per week.

Youth Sports Trust LogoIn July 2007 the Prime Minister announced the investment of an additional £100m for the National School Sport Strategy, in order to further increase the number of children and young people aged 5-19 participating in PE and sport to 5 hours per week. The offer will be made up of: 2 hours of high quality curriculum physical education and 3 hours of sport beyond the curriculum delivered through a range of school, community and club providers.
