raise standards in writing, giving students a creative boost and enabling teachers to have opportunities to meet to discuss teaching approaches and share new teaching materials.

Eight of the FCLP schools have been involved in the project looking at monitoring, creativity and particularly boys engagement with writing skills. The writing project has worked along side the Media Arts project with additional funding being drawn down from Somerset County Council and QCA (Qualifications and Curriculum Authority).

In the last year the team of head teachers have particularly focused on teacher support and the development of DVD with the pupils. So far teachers and pupils have noted:

“All the pupils seem much more engaged and the quality of writing has really improved”

“I trained to teach Key Stage 2 and never had phonics training; the training helped me to understand how I could work with pupils to understand phonics in writing”

“It was really good not having to travel out of Frome and know that what we were doing was going to help children across all the schools”

“When we watched the film I could see what the costumes were like and the faces, then I knew what to write about the characters”

“I liked the film and it gave me good ideas for my story”

The Project is continuing in the coming year building on this work.
